This was my 1st ever wheel to wheel race in Aug 2009 after 2 training programs with Tuason Racing School. It was going to be a great test of whether I could be fast with other cars around. Driving solo and having someone closely in front or behind is COMPLETELY different.
Even after completing my introductory program to racing in May 2009, I wasnt ready just yet. I had the basics, but I needed to refine them. I took up another training program with TRS to have 3 days of testing with the Ford Focus prior to the race. Those 3 days really gave me the confidence to compete the coming weekend. I wasnt only quicker, I was more consistent.
It was a 2 race format over the weekend, starting with 3 practice sessions, 1 qualifying time trial, the opening race on Saturday and 1 more on Sunday, with a total of 7 cars on the grid, including me. I got pole position with a time of 1’50″93 and lead from start to finish (I did make some mistakes), coincidentally winning my 1st race on the day my driving license turned 4. Sunday was a reverse grid, with the 1st 4 finishers from Saturday swapping places. Started 4th and finished 2nd.
This is probably THE most stressful position to start in. You keep questioning if youre gonna keep or lose the lead after the 1st corner.
I was absolutely delighted to obtain such results within 5 months.
I would like to thank TRS for their great efforts in preparing both the car and I for this fruitful event.
“Wong’s effort to fly in from Singapore to compete in the race proved fruitful as he ruled the first race of this event supported by Ford Focus, Goodyear Racing, Standard Insurance, OMP, Discovery Suites, Yellow Cab, Aguila Auto Glass, Businessworld, C!
